Royce Cube FAQs

If you have decided to purchase a Royce Cube Pergola it will include a full set of instructions and tools for self-installation, assuming you have some basic DIY skills and have assistance from at least one other person. You can also find our Cube Assembly Instructional video on our website.

Assembly time, dependant on which size of Cube you are installing, is normally between 4-6 hours.

If you are fixing your pergola to porcelain tiles please take care to only use the recommended drill fitting and bolt type. Your local hardware specialist can advise you with this. We do not provide securing bolts with the Cube Pergola.

We recommend that you seek the advice of your local hardware specialist to find the correct fixing for your surface.

Pergolas are typically considered temporary structures and often do not require planning permission. However, it’s advisable to discuss this matter when selecting the appropriate pergola type for purchase. Unlike structures cemented into the ground, pergolas are secured to existing surfaces, making them easy to disassemble and move without the need for planning consent.

It’s important to note that while pergolas generally do not require planning permission, their height could potentially encroach on neighbouring properties. To minimise any potential conflicts, it’s best to position pergolas as far away from property boundaries as possible, though this isn’t essential if the pergola is placed on natural ground. It’s advisable to consult with your neighbours to avoid any possible disputes in the future.

If the pergola is within 2 meters of the boundary, its maximum height should not exceed 2.5 meters (8’2″).

Planning permission may be necessary if the pergola is to be installed at the front of your house.

Planning permission might be required for properties in conservation areas or if the structure is to be installed between the house and the boundary.

Properties designated as listed buildings typically require planning permission for pergola installation.

Adding a pergola to a veranda, balcony, or raised platform may occasionally neces-sitate planning permission due to increased height, and it must comply with Building Regulations.

If you are uncertain we recommend contacting your local planning authority.

Prior to installing your pergola, it is essential to pinpoint a suitable and practical location. From the beginning it is important to note that a pergola must be installed on a solid surface. Beneath the finished surface, a support structure, such as a concrete pad, should be laid in order to secure the finished structure.. If you choose to have a professional installation you must ensure that the groundwork is in place beforehand.

The Royce Cube has been designed to maximise the allowable height under building regulations and has a height of 2.5m.

If installing onto decking we again suggest a solid foundation or structural beam under each leg so the footplate will be secured in place.

By solid foundation we recommend a minimum 50cm3 of high strength 40N concrete.

If your intention is to install a pergola to an existing surface like decking, it’s advisable to inspect the structural integrity beneath the surface. For instance, materials like sand commonly found beneath decking will not provide adequate stability, nor would composite decking without a stronger support underneath.

However, there might already be structural beams underneath, where the footplates would rest. While this isn’t inherently problematic, but it’s crucial to ensure that the footplates are fixed to sufficiently wide structural beams, allowing for the foot plate to be securely bolted.

Regardless of the surface type, it’s imperative to assess what is underneath it. The Cube should always be secured in place so, if you are planning to undertake installation without professional assistance, this aspect warrants careful consideration.

If you are planning to install screens on your Royce cube pergola they work best when the fall between legs is less than 10mm. This will allow your screens to move up and down smoothly.

The Royce Cube is a freestanding structure and is not designed to be screwed in to a wall. (Note: If the installation is non standard and does not follow the instruction manual your guarantee will be void)

If installing onto slabs, porcelain or paving and the thickness is less than 15mm please ensure there is a solid foundation.

By solid foundation we recommend a minimum 50cm3 of high strength 40N concrete.

If you are installing onto other surface types such as gravel, astroturf or other aggregates please ensure there is a solid foundation for each leg and footplate.

If your pergola installation involves adding Pull Down Screens or Louvre Panel options, it’s essential to ensure precise leveling of the structure. Proper leveling is crucial for the effective op-eration of the Pull Down Screens and Fixed and Adjustable Louver Panel options.

The measurement between the legs of your Cube Pergola will need to be checked in order for the screen and louver panel options to operate correctly as designed.

Once the pergola legs are accurately measured, they can be securely bolted down before any side options are installed. This ensures stability and facilitates smooth operation of the side features.

While traditional designs of pergolas typically feature a basic wooden structure with trelliswork sup-ported on columns or posts, serving as a framework for climbing plants, contemporary pergolas have evolved significantly in terms of both design, functionality and durability.

Modern pergolas come in weather-resistant aluminum, and offer additional features like retractable louvres, pull down screens and clever drainage systems, effectively transforming your outdoor area into a year-round usable living space for relaxation, dining, and entertaining.

When placed near the home or alongside, it is worth noting also the comparative savings from that of a traditional extension. The Royce Cube has been designed to maximise the allowable height under building regulations and has a height of 2.5m.

The Cube features adjustable louvres that are split 50/50, so you can control each half of the pergola separately to allow sunshine or shade.

With built in Solar powered LED lights, the Cube can be installed away from any power source. With 3 different light settings that can be dimmed to suit your setting.

The Royce cube pergola has been designed with drainage channels to disperse water down each of the pergola legs.

The Cube Pull Down Screens

The Cube’s Pull Down Screens are made in precision cut high quality Texteline and provide protection from wind, rain and sun all year round.

The Screens are an optional addition to your Cube in 3M, 3.6M and 4M and can be added after the main build of your Cube.

Take some time to consider both the aesthetics of your Cube and how the screens will work for you; if your Cube is free standing you may want to install the pull down screens on all sides, thus creating a protected living area, or if your Cube is structured as part of your indoor-outdoor living area you may only want screen protection on 2 or 3 sides.

Royce Cube Fixed Louvre Panels

Add a sense of style and compliment your Cube with the Fixed Louvre Screens made in sturdy aluminium with a powder coated anthracite finish which blends perfectly with the Cube’s main frame. They provide privacy, shade and style to the Royce Cube Pergola.

They are (31cm) wide and designed to be fitted either alone or multiple side by side between the legs. They attach to the frame with a simple bolting system meaning they can be easily installed.

The Cube has a simple but ingenious built-in drainage system that lets rainwater flow along channels in the roof louvres and down to the ground via the hollow supporting legs of the structure. Learning from previous designs, The Cube has deeper-profile drainage sections to ensure that water escapes quickly so that you have a drip-free area beneath.

Wind, Rain & Snow

The Cube has been rigorously tested for snow, wind and rain loading:

• WIND RATED GRADE 8 ON BEAUFORT SCALE (UP TO 51MPH).

• SNOW WEIGHT TESTED TO 27.5KG.

• DEEP GUTTERING SYSTEM TESTED TO 60L.

The Cube’s powder-coated aluminium construction means it is corrosion-free. It is also UV and heat-protected plus fade-resistant, therefore ideal for long-term use.

Minimum maintenance is required for the Royce Cube pergola.

You can wash the frame with soap and water, using a pressure washer is allowed but be cautious of applying harsh pressure on certain areas.

Integrated guttering can also be cleared with a pressure washer

Yes, screens can be added to your previously installed frame at any point
